Protecting What We Drink:
Groundwater Highlights and Next Steps
In April, Jefferson County residents got a closer look at their water during a public presentation hosted by the Land and Water Conservation Department. The event revealed results from a county-wide groundwater quality study, highlighting trends in nitrate and arsenic levels across private wells.
With clean drinking water critical to public health and agriculture, the study underscored the importance of regular testing and local conservation practices. Residents in specific areas were offered free arsenic screening and nitrate test kits, and ongoing outreach efforts will continue throughout the summer—including at the Jefferson County Fair in July.

Voices of Jefferson County
Michael Wineke
First Vice Chair, Jefferson County Board of Supervisors (District 8)
Michael Wineke has served on the Jefferson County Board since 2014. In addition to his role as First Vice Chair, he chairs the Executive Committee and serves on the Broadband Work Group, Human Services Board, ADRC Advisory Committee, and the Community Action Coalition.
A career public servant, Michael spent 36 years in Dane County’s Economic Support Division of Human Services. He also served on the City of Verona Common Council and the Police and Fire Commission before continuing his service in Jefferson County.
Michael values the cooperative spirit of the Board, noting the professionalism and lack of political division as a key strength. Looking ahead, he sees potential funding reductions from the federal government as a major challenge—one that will require thoughtful decision-making to maintain essential services.
He is especially proud of Jefferson County’s role in completing the interurban recreational trail, a project made possible through collaboration across multiple levels of government and private partners.
Michael recommends Korth Park’s “Brew With a View” as a favorite local event, combining scenic views, community, and support for the county park system.
Inspired by stories of perseverance, he cites Truman by David McCullough and Grant by Ron Chernow as two books that have influenced his perspective on leadership. In his personal time, he and his wife enjoy traveling and have visited 40 states and over 20 countries.
Sheriff Travis Maze
From Baseball Cards to a Badge: A Lifetime of Service
A simple act of kindness can shape a lifetime. For Travis Maze, it was a deputy handing him a pack of baseball cards as a young boy in Ixonia. "I thought there was another side to Law Enforcement that not many people talk about," he recalls, "and I want to be the one who hands out baseball cards."
Now Sheriff of Jefferson County, Maze brings 26.5 years of experience to his role, overseeing 130 personnel across the County Jail, Patrol Division, and law enforcement operations.
Throughout his career, Maze credits his family's unwavering support, particularly his wife, who has been by his side the entire journey. Their commitment enabled him to pursue leadership development while maintaining the work-life balance essential to effective public service.
A 40-year Jefferson County resident, Maze has watched the community evolve and takes pride in contributing to its future. His involvement extends beyond law enforcement to include service on a local school board, broadening his perspective on community needs.
Sheriff Maze operates by a clear principle: "Are we doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right way, for the right reason?" This philosophy guides departmental decisions and reinforces their commitment to serving residents with integrity.
His advice to aspiring public servants is direct: "Always remember that you are here to serve the citizens. Keep that your number one priority, and you will be rewarded greatly with their appreciation."
When not serving the county, you'll find Sheriff Maze on local golf courses with family—his favorite way to recharge while staying connected to the community he protects.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office serves residents through law enforcement, court services, and jail operations. For more information about their services or career opportunities, visit https://www.jeffersoncountywi.gov/departments/sheriff/.
Jefferson County Honored for Leadership in Land Preservation
We’re proud to share that Jefferson County has received the Working Lands Preservation Award from Gathering Waters: Wisconsin’s Alliance for Land Trusts, recognizing our long-standing efforts to preserve farmland and natural resources. “This recognition reflects the values of our community,” said County Administrator Michael Luckey. “Our strategic plan ensures that land-use decisions protect what makes Jefferson County special—our environment, our character, and our quality of life.” Through the innovative work of the Land and Water Conservation Department (LWCD), the county has:
Preserved 1,122 acres of farmland through 10 conservation easements
Supported farmers with soil and water quality programs
Promoted sustainable agriculture with cover crops, rain gardens, and more
Partnered with public health to raise awareness of groundwater protection
Strengthened agricultural protections through the Wisconsin Farmland Protection Partnership
These programs are more than policy—they’re about protecting our legacy for future generations. Congratulations to all involved in this incredible achievement! To learn more about Jefferson County’s conservation efforts, visit jeffersoncountywi.gov.
Celebrating 2025 Nurse of the Year: Maria De La Luz Lira
We’re thrilled to announce that Maria De La Luz Lira, Public Health Nurse at the Jefferson County Health Department, has been named 2025 Nurse of the Year for her outstanding dedication to culturally competent and inclusive care.
Maria’s journey—from arriving in the U.S. as a child who didn’t speak English to becoming a trusted advocate and health leader—is a powerful story of resilience, purpose, and passion. Inspired by her own family’s struggles with language barriers, she now uses her bilingual skills to connect deeply with Spanish-speaking families, ensuring that no one feels left out of their own health journey.
Working within the Maternal Child and Family Health Division, Maria helps expectant mothers access vital services—like prenatal care, labor and delivery support, and early childhood resources—with compassion and clarity. Her advocacy extends beyond clinic walls; she’s spoken at the Wisconsin State Capitol to champion better postpartum care access for underserved families. “The work I do allows me to help them and make a difference in their lives,” she shared. “Now I understand that it really does take a village.”
Maria’s recognition as Nurse of the Year reflects not only her clinical expertise, but also her heart for the community. Jefferson County is proud to have her on our team. Congratulations, Maria, and thank you for being a voice, a guide, and a true example of care without borders.
* The Wisconsin Nurses Association (WNA) provided the rationale for Maria de la Luz Lira's being named Nurse of the Year, which was published in a special section of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
